Benson again played a critical role in the Blue Bombers kicking battery in 2024 as both punter Jamieson Sheahan and placekicker Sergio Castillo enjoyed solid seasons. He suited up for all 18 regular season games plus the Western Final and Grey Cup and including his days with Edmonton (2012), B.C. (2014-18), Ottawa (2019) and Winnipeg (2021-) Benson has now suited up for 157 regular-season games.
He was part of the 2021 Blue Bombers Grey Cup championship team.
On February 11, 2025 Benson signed a one-year contract to remain with the team.
Like clockwork, Benson continued to be unbelievably consistent at his craft as the long snapper for the Blue Bombers in 2023. He appeared in all 18 regular season games and both the Western Final and Grey Cup in 2023 and has now dressed for 139 regular season games in his CFL career. Benson was part of the battery that allowed placekicker Sergio Castillo set a club record by connecting on 90.2 percent of his field goal attempts in 2023.
Benson continued his solid work as the club’s long-snapper in his second season in Winnipeg. Widely considered one of the best in the CFL, he handled the chores for all 18 regular season games and both playoff contests.
Benson has now suited up for 121 CFL games in his career with Winnipeg, Edmonton, B.C. and Ottawa.
Benson’s first year with his hometown team was a memorable one, as he played an integral role in a dominant season capped by victory in the 108th Grey Cup. The club’s long-snapper and a reserve linebacker, Benson played in all 14 regular-season games and both the Western Final and Grey Cup, capturing the first championship of his career.
A veteran CFLer with eight years experience, Benson played in his 100th career game against B.C. on October 23, 2022 and now has 103 regular-season games to his name.
Benson first joined the Blue Bombers as a free agent in February of 2021 and signed a two-year contract extension to remain with the club on January 24, 2022.
Benson was first signed by Edmonton in 2012 and played three games that season. He spent 2013 on the club’s practice roster and was then signed by the B.C. Lions in August of 2014. He spent the next five seasons in Vancouver, appearing in 81 games. Benson was then signed by Ottawa in the summer of 2019, and dressed for five games for the RedBlacks that season.
He signed with the Montreal Alouettes as a free agent in 2020, but his contract expired without him playing a game for them following the cancellation of the CFL season.
A product of St. Paul’s High School, Benson played for the Winnipeg Rifles junior team before attending Acadia University.
