Blue Bombers Announce Team Award Winners

WINNIPEG, MB., November 1, 2017 –   The Canadian Football League announced today the team winners for the 2017 CFL Player Awards. Players were selected by voting members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) and CFL head coaches.

For the second straight season, quarterback Matt Nichols was named the club’s Most Outstanding Player. Nichols has started all 17 games for Winnipeg in 2017, posting a current record of 11-6, passing for a career-high 4,472 yards, 28 touchdowns with just eight interceptions while also rushing for another two scores. Nichols sits first in the CFL with a QUAR of 86.4 and leads an offence that has scored the most points in the CFL at 531.

Running back Andrew Harris once again has been named the club’s Most Outstanding Canadian (unanimous). In 17 games this season, Harris has rushed for 967 yards (third in the league) on 181 carries, scoring six touchdowns. Harris also leads the entire CFL in receptions with 100 for 829 yards and one touchdown. This is Harris’ fourth team nomination for Most Outstanding Canadian (twice as a member of the B.C. Lions).

Cornerback Chris Randle has been named the club’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2017. Randle has played in all 17 games, accumulating five interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), 58 defensive tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery.

Left tackle Stanley Bryant has played in all 17 games this season, earning his third team nomination as Most Outstanding Lineman (twice as a member of the Stampeders).

For the second consecutive season, kicker Justin Medlock earned the vote as the club’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player. Medlock – the CFL’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player a year ago after hitting a record 60 field goals – leads the league in scoring with 215 points and 53 field goals. He connected on game-winning field goals in overtime vs. Saskatchewan on Canada Day and Montreal in late August, hit two field goals in the last minute in a victory over Ottawa in August, and tied the club record he already shares with Trevor Kennerd with seven field goals in last week’s game against B.C.

Defensive back Brandon Alexander has been named the club’s Most Outstanding Rookie. Alexander has started games at halfback, cornerback and outside linebacker in his first season and has registered 49 tackles, two forces fumbles, a tackle for loss and four pass knockdowns in just 14 games, missing three due to injury.
