Those privileged enough to have seen him play raved about Tom ‘Citation’ Casey’s athletic gifts as a running back, defensive back and punter. He was a Western Inter-provincial Football Union all-star in each year he played for the Bombers and was the first black player inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1964.
But Casey was just as giving off the field, coaching high school girls basketball while studying to become a doctor. In 1956 he was named Winnipeg’s ‘Citizen of the Year.’
Martin Gainor is a member of the University of North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame and came to Winnipeg after his college days as an already accomplished athlete in both football and boxing. He played three years with the Bombers, helping them to the 1939 Grey Cup.
Fred Reid joined the Bombers during the end of Charles Roberts domination of the backfield and then picked up the torch and ran with it. He is sixth on the club’s all-time rushing list behind Roberts, Leo Lewis, Willard Reaves, Jim Washington and Gerry James and on Aug. 21, 2009 set the team record with 260 yards rushing in a win over B.C.
