He Wore It Well: Jonathan Hefney, DB, 2009-11
Hefney tore it up during his college days at Tennessee, being named to the 2004 Freshman All-SEC all-star squad and a 2007 First-Team All-SEC selection in 2007. But at 5-9, 185 pounds it was difficult for him to stick in the NFL. And so after stints with Tampa Bay and Philadelphia – he would later take a shot with Detroit in 2010 – Hefney found a football home with the Bombers. He was a CFL All-Star in 2009, his first year, and was also the East Division’s Most Outstanding Rookie that season. He was a big part of the ‘Swaggerville’ defence of 2011 before moving on to Calgary and then Montreal, where his career ended after a nasty collision led to a neck injury.
FYI:
Billy Cooper came to the Bombers from the Winnipeg Rods junior program and was twice named the club’s top Canadian. He left the Bombers after four seasons with Winnipeg and spent the next six years in Ottawa with the Rough Riders, winning Grey Cups in 1968 and 1969 before moving on to Edmonton in 1973 and Toronto a year later.
Notable:
Ike Charlton came to the Bombers after bouncing around the NFL as a draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks then with Jacksonville, the New York Giants, Oakland and New England. He left Winnipeg after six years and helped Montreal win a Grey Cup in 2010. After retiring he participated in the NFL’s coaching internship program, worked his way up the ranks and has spent the last two years with the Ottawa REDBLACKS, helping them to the 2016 Grey Cup title.
