He Wore It Well:
Tom Burgess, 1990-91
Tom Burgess is the last QB to help guide the Bombers to a Grey Cup in 1990, and he was also one of the most popular men to ever take a snap from centre in these parts.
Burgess arrived from the Saskatchewan Roughriders during training camp in ’90 and was a perfect fit for a team built on defence. He spent just two years in Winnipeg before leaving for Ottawa after the signing of Matt Dunigan before the ’92 season, but in those years he led the Bombers to a championship – and was named MVP of the Grey Cup game in the process – and a division final a year later.
He never pointed fingers and was adored by the men up front who protected him. More importantly, Burgess understood his role with his team and how to lead it.

Chris Matthews parlayed his two years with the Bombers into a solid NFL career, first with the Seattle Seahawks and now with the Baltimore Ravens. He pulled in 81 passes for 1,192 yards in his rookie year and was given his release after the 2013 season to pursue NFL opportunities. Matthews was working at a Foot Locker when the Seahawks called to offer him a gig. In the Seahawks’ loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX, Matthews had four receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown. Media reports indicated that his breakout performance in that game caused his rookie card to jump in value by 3,500 per cent… Matthews rejoined the Bombers at the start of the 2019 season and started six games before being released.
Notable:
Six quarterbacks were selected ahead of Tom Brady in the 2000 NFL Draft, two of which played for the Bombers and wore #13: Tee Martin and Spergon Wynn. The six QBs taken ahead of Brady, the slam dunk Pro Football Hall of Famer, were: Chad Pennington, Giovanni Carmazzi, Chris Redman, Martin, Marc Bulger and Wynn.
