He Wore It Well:
Justin Medlock, 2016-19
Justin Medlock smashed both Blue Bomber and CFL records in his first year in blue and gold, including setting the league’s all-time single season field goal record with 60. He followed that up by hitting 56 field goals in 2017 and was the league’s leading scorer. Medlock famously hit on 14 of 15 in the Bombers 2019 playoff run, including tying a record with six field goals in the Grey Cup win over Hamilton — his last game in the CFL.
Medlock finished with a career field-goal percentage of 86.5 and was a remarkable 96.5 percent on field goals from 40 yards and shorter. As well, his playoff career field-goal percentage was a sparkling 89.5. He was also an underrated punter, Medlock with a career average of 42.7 yards.
FYI:
It was Garza who started the 1993 East Final for the Bombers after Matt Dunigan was injured in Week 17. He led the Bombers to a victory in that game, but the Bombers came up short a week later in the 1993 Grey Cup game. Garza married one of Cal Murphy’s daughters and is currently a scout with the Dallas Cowboys.
Notable:
Vince Phason spent seven years with the Bombers after stints with Edmonton and B.C. and was a CFL all-star in 1982. In 1988, three years after his final year in the CFL with the Montreal Concordes, Phason was paralyzed from the chest down in a car accident. Phason stayed active with the game, serving as a volunteer assistant coach with a high school in Denver.
