He Wore It Well:
Chris Randle, CB, 2014-18
The Bombers made a trade just before free agency in 2014 to acquire Randle from the Calgary Stampeders, sending the 24th overall choice in that year’s CFL Draft to the Calgary Stampeders for the 26th overall selection and a defensive back with a lot of upside — Randle.
Randle had been named the Stamps top rookie in 2012, but the Bombers made the move to acquire and sign the defensive back to shore up their secondary. The Utah State product did that and then some during his days in Winnipeg as he morphed into not only a solid defender — as evidenced by his selection as the team’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2017 — but also a captain and a leader on the team and was also the club’s nominee for the prestigious Tom Pate Award in 2017.
FYI:
Paul Osbalidston played five games for the Bombers during the 1986 season, connecting on nine of 15 field goals as a replacement for an injured Trevor Kennerd. He moved on to Hamilton after his short stint with the Bombers and became a three-time CFL all-star and two-time Grey Cup champion with the Tiger-Cats… The Bombers debut of Zach Collaros will go down in club folklore. Acquired just before the trade deadline in October of 2019, Collaros won his first regular-season start for the Bombers and then was behind centre for their memorable run through the playoffs, with three more wins against Calgary, Saskatchewan and then Hamilton in the 107th Grey Cup.
Notable:
Some fans may remember Jay Walker from the 1998 season. The Bombers were just 3-15 that season and trying to find a star at QB – T.J. Rubley, Troy Kopp, Chris Vargas – when Walker came off the bench in the final two games of the season and threw for four touchdowns while completing 67.4 per cent of his passes. But the club and Walker couldn’t agree to terms on a new deal in the winter of 1999 and he stepped away from the game.
Walker is now a member of the Maryland House of Delegates and a college football analyst for ESPN.
